Exercise Therapy for Low Back Pain:

When assessing appropriate exercises and rehab we have some specific focuses during our clinical assessment:

  1. Your goals: are you needing to complete a big hike or a marathon? Are you a surfer in Shoreham looking to head to Bali or a golfer in Cape Schank needing to get back on the course. Regardless - your goal is our goal.

  2. What your physical activity levels already are - if you are in the gym 5 days per week, rehab may focus on mobility and recovery. If you are not very active, then we might be focusing on strengthening.

  3. Your range of motion of the spine as well as hips and movements which can provoke the pain (such as flexion or extension)

  4. Your abdominal muscle strength and control - whether assessing any underlying weakness

  5. Hip stability and control - whether there is weakness/ instability or loss of mobility

  6. Your load tolerance - meaning how much exercise can your body manage before pain or fatigue

We also have a number of patient we co-manage with their Trainers, Exercise Physiologist or Pilates instructors. If you have a good support network already, then we may simply give you and your team some information on what we observed so that may become a focus of your sessions.
