Frequently Asked QuestionS
Frequently Asked Questions
No, you do not need a referral to see an osteopath or for remedial massage at Flinders Health and Wellness Clinic. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners who can assess, diagnose, and treat musculoskeletal conditions including back pain, neck pain, sports injuries, and headaches without a GP referral.
You can book your osteopathy appointment online through our Book Now page, contact us via email through our Contact Us page, or call our clinic directly. Our team is available to help you access prompt, professional osteopathic care.
Note: If you have a chronic disease management plan (EPC) or Enhanced Primary Care plan from your GP, please bring your referral to access Medicare rebates.
Medical imaging and reports: Please bring any relevant MRI scans, CT scans, X-rays, or ultrasound reports related to your condition. While we can access some imaging results online, public hospital scans are not typically available digitally, so physical copies are recommended.
Referral and medical information: If you have been referred by a GP or specialist, bring your referral letter, care plan documentation, or discharge paperwork. This helps us provide comprehensive treatment and coordinate your care.
Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to allow your osteopath to properly assess movement, posture, and the affected area. For lower back pain, hip problems, or leg injuries, shorts or activewear are ideal.
Sport-specific equipment: If your injury relates to running, cycling, or another sport, bringing relevant footwear or equipment can assist with biomechanical assessment.
Accessibility requirements: If you have mobility limitations or require assistance with wheelchair access, handrails, or support on arrival, please contact our clinic before your appointment so we can ensure a safe and smooth visit.
Yes, osteopathy and remedial massage services at Flinders Health and Wellness Clinic are covered by most private health insurance providers under Extras cover. We have HICAPS facilities available, allowing you to claim your rebate on the spot and only pay the gap amount.
To check your eligibility and rebate amount, contact your health fund prior to your appointment or bring your membership card and we can process your claim immediately after treatment.
Note: Rebate amounts vary depending on your level of cover and annual limits with your provider.
Osteopathy can be partially covered by Medicare if you have a valid Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan or Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan from your GP. Under these plans, you may be eligible for up to 5 allied health visits per calendar year with a Medicare rebate.
To access Medicare rebates for osteopathy treatment, you will need a referral from your GP. Please bring your referral letter to your appointment so we can process your claim correctly.
Please note: Remedial massage is not covered under Medicare EPC plans, but may be claimable through private health insurance or WorkCover/TAC schemes depending on your circumstances.
Most treatments are gentle and non-invasive. Some of the Orthopedic testing may provoke pain, however we will explain this while performing and ensure you are aware of techniques and manoeuvres which may be pain provoking.
We provide care to those seeking assistance directly for a complaint. If you do have complex care needs, have multiple providers or are in recovery from a surgery or medical intervention it is advised you check with your primary care provider first.
In Australia, both osteopaths, physiotherapists and chiropractors are regulated healthcare professionals who specialise in treating musculoskeletal conditions. The difference can come from the approach, training and philosophy.
-
Osteopaths tend to look at the entire body and aim to provide support with manual therapy and prescription of rehab programs. We tend to see a broad range of musculoskeletal issues, from a range of causes. Osteopaths tend to see a heavily musculoskeletal case-load with a mix of chronic and acute complaints. Osteopaths focus on ranges of motion, special testing and functional assessment for musculoskeletal assessment. We recognise that asymmetry is normal, alignment is variable between people - however we focus on whether those issues are contributing to the biggest picture of the condition you are experiencing.
-
Chiropractic care often places greater emphasis on the spine and nervous system. The emphasis is often on alignment and they use manual techniques such as: applicators, drop tables and manipulation. Many people find great relief with Chiropractic care.
-
Physiotherapy is a widely valued member the medical care system. They complete a 4 year degree with focus on providing support in the hospital, aged care and private practice setting. Physiotherapy follows a strong evidence informed plan for management, while still completing similar assessments and ongoing capacity assessment.
What can matter more than the professional title - is whether the therapists can support the following:
-
Can trust the therapist providing care and feel heard
-
Whether they are providing care that improves your symptoms
-
Whether they are providing care that aligns with your goals
-
They know when to refer your condition on and when you need escalated medical assessment
-
If they have evidence to support the therapy that they provide.
-
They are not making you feel dependant on them - you should feel empowered after seeing any MSK (musuloskeletal) practitioner = Not that you 'need' them every time you have pain. While it is a compliment that someone trusts our opinion, we want you to feel confident in your own body.
Obviously, this page has been written by an Osteopath, Brooke Stevenson. I personally and professionally can appreciate that all practitioners can have their role to play in your care. If you were unsure of who might be able to help - feel free to call us : 0403 759 953.

Some techniques can create a clicking or 'cracking' sound, but Osteopathy isn't just about that. We tend to focus on finding the approach which works best for your body and comfort level - many techniques are very gentle and don't involve manipulation at all. If we do think a technique may help, we will discuss and explain first.
However the biggest focus on treatment is getting you moving in general, with a higher focus placed on rehabilitation and supportive care.
We have a range of patients who see us for rehab only - so you don't need to have any manual therapy done if you don't feel comfortable.
Private health rebates may be available on the spot with our HICAPs claiming system, however there can be significant variation between policy limits as well as extras. We strongly suggest you check first on whether you are eligible as well as your coverage.
We will need you to check this yourself prior to the appointment as there are a range of levels of cover and providers.
Osteopaths are expertly trained to provide treatment and support to a range of musculoskeletal conditions.
Many people associate Osteopaths with 'bones' however we work with a joints, ligament injuries, tendinopathies, headaches, migraines, as well as sporting injuries.
We conduct thorough assessments, provide diagnosis within our scope of practice, we use a range of hands-on based therapy as well as additional rehab with the aim of strengthening you in recovery. We follow clinical guidelines where available and provide tailored exercise programs and self-management strategies.
Osteopaths work as part of your healthcare team, collaborating with GPs, physiotherapists, and specialists. We can provide referrals for imaging and give you guidance on whether further referral is needed.
To be an Osteopath and maintain registration we are required to obtain a Bachelor of Science (Clinical Sciences) and a Master of Health Science (Osteopathy).
During the Masters degree, we also complete a research project and have ongoing CPD and professional education standards.
Our Osteopaths are both fully registered with AHPRA.
Tegan our remedial therapist has completed her training in Australia and is a registered remedial massage therapist - which also requires her to complete ongoing continued professional development.
