Conditions we work with:
Neck pain commonly presents as stiffness, reduced movement, muscle tension, headaches, or pain the can travel into the shoulders, upper back or arms. Symptoms can develop suddenly after an injury or strain, or gradually through prolonged stress, postural overload (such as looking at your phone for long periods of time) or repeated activity.
Common neck-related issues we see are:
- Acute neck pain and stiffness
- Posture or desk-related neck pain
- Cervicogenic headaches (neck related headaches)
- Nerve irritation causing arm pain, tingling or changes to feeling in the arm or hand
- Disc injuries
- Whiplash
- Facet related pains
Many neck problems involve a combination of muscle tension, joint restriction and may relate to more than one specific cause. Our approach focuses on assessing the neck as well as the mid back, ribs, shoulders and breathing to understand contributing factors.
Treatment is tailored to your sensitivity and also your underlying contributing factors. It may involve dry needling, traction, light mobilisation, fascial release and giving you tools to help manage your pain. Often treatment will involve education and is not a passive only process. We focus on active management and in the case of chronic pain, you may need to build strength and make some adjustments to assist with your recovery.
Headaches and jaw pain can arise from a variety of factors. TMJ or jaw pain can result from heavy dental surgical procedures, prolonged clenching, trauma as well as arthritis or referral from other conditions.
TMJ issues we commonly see are:
- Jaw clicking
- Tension headaches
- Clenching and bruxism
- TMJ pain
Jaw and neck function are closely linked, which is whyTMJ issues often occur alongside headaches. Headache issues we often see are:
- Migraines
- Cervicogenic or neck related headaches
- Occipital neuralgia (irritation of nerve at the back of the skull)
Headaches can often relate to a range of contributing factors and can be influenced by triggers such as stress, neck conditions, hormones, certain foods or after a concussion. Even when headaches don't have a single clear cause. addressing contributing factors such as neck stability, jaw mechanics, posture and breathing patterns may reduce frequency and severity.
Our techniques for headaches are very gentle (so we won't be cracking your neck), instead we focus on light fascia release techniques, traction to the neck and light joint mobilisation and selective massage. We also will assess for stability of the neck and if needed can provide tools to help strengthen your neck muscles to reduce pressure.
Shoulder pain can develop suddenly or over a period of time and over-use. Over-use issues can develop from repeated strain, sporting activity, lifting, or prolonged desk posture or years after a prior trauma. Symptoms can include pain when lifting the arm, weakness, stiffness, clicking, or discomfort that can travel to the shoulder blade, the neck or upper back.
Many shoulder problems involve a combination of muscle tension, joint restriction and movement pattern over-load rather than a single trauma (despite the pain sometimes coming on suddenly).
Our combined approach focuses on assessing the shoulder in the context of the whole upper body - including the ribs, neck, collarbone and associated joints and movement of the mid back. Treatment may include hands on therapy, movement education and exercise strategies aiming to improve shoulder blade stability, mobility and confidence with movement.
There are times where referral is suggested, in particular if surgical consideration is required. We aim to ensure you have timely referral if needed and the vast majority of shoulder issues will resolve or improve considerably with conservative care.
Mid back (thoracic spine) pain often presents as tightness between the shoulder blades, stiffness with twisting (or on your golf swing), or discomfort linked to posture, desk work or stress. Many people notice symptoms with prolonged sitting, lifting, or reduced movement through the ribs and upper back.
Our approach focuses on understanding how your spine, ribs and breathing mechanics work together. Some cases can involve posture overload or muscle tension, while others can involve joint restriction or referred pain patterns.
Following a thorough assessment, treatment may include hands-on therapy, movement guidance and exercise strategies designed to improve mobility and reduce strain. We often add in some advice for your ergonomics as well as how you can self manage.
If symptoms suggest a more specific condition, we will guide you towards the appropriate referrals.
Care for lower back injuries is a common cause for people visiting the clinic. We see acute low back pains, chronic back pains, unstable backs as well as people experiencing referred pains. We are careful with lower back injuries and recognise careful screening is important to ensure you are provided with appropriate care.
All back pain patients are thoroughly screened and assessed before any treatment and if there are signs of more serious complaints, then we will direct you the right way.
We are informed by the NICE guidelines for lower back complaints and while some complaints are specific - such as a disc injury, bone fracture, spondylolithesis or facet generated pain. A number of acute lower back issues are recognised as being 'non-specific' meaning it's likely a combination of tissues can be responsible.
We are careful with imaging prescription and don't advise imaging unless it will change the management of your condition.
Osteopathic care for knee and hip complaints involves assessing your range of movement both at the injured area as well as as other joints which might be contributing to your symptoms. Performing special testing designed to assist with diagnosing and localising areas which may be injured or causing your pain. Advice and referral for further imaging if a more serious or alternative treatment pathway would be more suitable.
Common knee and hip issues we see are:
- Osteoarthritis of the knee or hip
- Hip impingement
- Labral and cartilage based injuries and we can provide supportive rehab if you are requiring further specialist review
- Ligament instability and strengthening/ taping advice
- Acute knee issues such as bakers cyst irritation, meniscus injury or patella complaints
- Tendinopathy to the gluteals, hamstrings, hip flexors, adductors and calf
Whether you are a weekend warrior, a professional athlete or starting a new activity, we can support all abilities and ages of sporting injuries.
Osteopathic management for sporting injuries involves assessing your biomechanics and movement patterns, careful further testing of specific muscles and joints and we can provide primary care for many of these complaints.
We commonly work with:
- Acute muscle tears, strains
- Ligament injuries
- SIJ instability and pain and greater trochanteric pain syndrome
- Joint instability - this can be relating to underlying 'hypermobility'
- Joint sprains or chronic sporting injuries
- Over-use or over-loading injuries
- Leg pains including Osgood Schlatter disease and Severs disease in young athletes
- Bones stress injuries
- Shoulder injuries such as rotator cuff pain, instability or over-use
- Surfing related neck and shoulder pain
- Sports-related osteoarthritis and mechanical joint pains
Treatment can include: massage, dry needling, kinesiotaping, joint traction or mobilisation as well as focused exercise rehab. We are realistic, some complaints do need further review or advice and we do our best to ensure if we are not the people to help, we can direct you on where to go.
Remedial massage therapy can assist by:
- Reducing muscle tightness
- Assisting with circulation and fluid movement through the body
- Addressing tight areas which maybe limiting your movement
- Working on DOMS or delayed onset muscle soreness
- Helping with posture related pains which might be limiting your range of motion
- Stretching and mobilising soft tissues
