Headaches and Jaw (TMJ) Pain

Headaches and jaw pain are common concerns that may arise from irritation in the neck, jaw joints, surrounding muscles or nerves. Because the jaw (TMJ) and upper neck share close biomechanical and neurological connections, issues in one area can often influence the other. Osteopathic assessment considers the interaction between the jaw, neck, posture and surrounding soft tissues to identify potential contributing factors.

Why People Seek Treatment:

•Jaw clicking or popping •Jaw stiffness or difficulty opening the mouth Adjusting post braces removal or following jaw procedure where jaw was open for prolonged period •Clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) •Tension headaches •Migraines •Cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches •Occipital neuralgia (irritation of nerves at the back of the skull)

How We Manage:

Treatment for headaches and jaw pain is tailored to your symptoms and potential contributing factors affecting the jaw, neck and surrounding muscles. Because the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and upper cervical spine are closely connected, treatment may address both regions.

Care may include gentle mobilisation of the jaw and neck, fascial release, dry needling where appropriate, soft tissue techniques and traction to the upper neck. We also focus on improving jaw mechanics, reducing muscular tension and providing strategies to help manage headache triggers and jaw strain.

Goals for Treatment:

• Reducing the frequency or intensity of headaches or jaw tension
• Improving jaw movement and reducing clicking, clenching or muscle tightness
• Offering non-medication based support for headache and TMJ discomfort
• Identifying posture, neck tension and lifestyle factors which may contribute to headaches
• Improving neck and jaw coordination to reduce strain through surrounding muscles
• Providing practical strategies for long-term self-management of headaches and jaw symptoms
